Summer in Pharsho Village:Life's Little "Fairy" Editor’s Notes: Summer, bearing hopes while brewing the richness of autumn, is like a passionate and enthusiastic young Tibetan girl, ushering people to encounter the most vigorous and prosperous moments of their lives. This summer, in Pharsho Village of Shicang Township in Sog County of Nagqu City of the Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region, we encountered not only a fascinating landscape, but also the cultured richness of humanity. The people and the things of eons past struck a chord in our hearts. It is our heartfelt belief that this place has enjoyed true resonance with the times, with the local people striding calmly to and welcoming their new lives all the while. Tenzin Droltso undertook two posts in the village. One was as secretary of the youth league; the other was as chairwoman of the village's women's federation. She is a cheerful young woman with modest, unsophisticated, shy, and kind-hearted characteristics. Her eyes are ever smiling, it seems. Those around her are met with an impression of being in the presence of a magical fairy. Should there be a shortage of laborers come harvest, she is the first one to jump to the task of recruiting fellow villagers to pitch in. Should a road or house need mending, there she is, ready to lend a hand. Fatigue does not seem to faze her, especially when it comes to aiding the most impoverished. After a community picnic, she is one of the first to start cleaning. In her own words, "I have to do what I can to help my neighbors." For the sake of providing a more hygienic environment, she calls for cadres (locally posted public servants) to come clear the streets every five to six days. These cleaning efforts hit every square inch, high to low. The cleaning crew is often on duty for an entire day. "Summers are best for this, but the bitter winter really takes it out of us. Still, we villagers have much more hygienic standards than before, so cleaning someone's front entrance doesn't take nearly as long as it used to." As she spoke, her beaming eyes never seemed to falter. Tenzin Droltso wishes not only for a hygienic village, but also a neat and clean house of her own. Her house is not big, but it is certainly cozy under her care. Her living room is decked top to bottom with her own personal selection of colors. The pink wallpaper especially gave us insight into just how much she loved her young life. The backrest of the sofas and the curtains bore exquisite tassels or lace. The room hosted traditional Tibetan furniture and was wiped spotlessly clean. Kettles, a thermos, teacups, and tissues were all neatly placed on the tables. Tenzin Droltso was unfortunately diagnosed with some chronic issues and now has to take medicine that bloats her up, but that does not deter her in the slightest. She has a thing for makeup and loves to get dressed up. On one hand, the little fairy likes to enjoy the beautiful life, but on the other hand, she is indeed a "brave warrior" in the grassland. For the sake of environmental protection, the garbage collected from village households on a daily basis is unable to be placed in a local landfill and instead has to be hauled to the township disposal unit. Tenzin is currently single and lives with her grandmother. Her life is simple. Other than working in the village and keeping busy for her family's farmland, she likes to watch the news and binge on creator content during her downtime. Being engaged in pretty much every form of village management and administration imaginable, Tenzin Droltso feels her life is far from uninteresting. Rather, she is empowered and has this drive to always do her best. She told us that the assistance provided by the village committee as well as other villagers has allowed her to recognize how much she has learned and grown. She is now more determined than ever to go that extra mile. (Text by Wu Jianying, Wang Xi, Ngawang Norbu & Photos by Wu Jianying, Wang Xi ;Translated by Huang Wenjuan) |
