Tibetan carpets popular with merchants

From: China Tibet Online

At the 2018 China (Qinghai) International Tibetan Carpet Exhibition, Tibetan carpets from Baima County in Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture made a stunning appearance, attracting the attentions of many merchants.

As a new participant of the exhibition, Baima County, has been developing its own Tibetan carpet industry since 2016. The Baima Lianshenghai Company, Ltd., which was established on April 2, 2013, currently has branches in Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Products include thangka, embroidery, Tibetan carpets, Tibetan incense, engraving, and others. Of these products, Lianshenghai’s Tibetan carpets are particularly popular. The carpets are made from wool produced on the snow-covered plateau at an altitude of four to five thousand meters above sea level. They are exquisitely woven and very warm, and have been exported to India, Nepal, and other places. The carpets are beloved by the local people.

The Baima County Kesen Lianhua Tibetan Carpet Factory hired three Nepali artisans and five local trainees to promote traditional handicraft techniques and help solve problems of unemployment among the poor. The factory’s products mainly consist of Tibetan carpets and tapestries, and the craftsmanship is based on traditional Nepali and Tibetan means of carpet production. This unique traditional handicraft and its eye-catching products have become very popular among consumers.

“Baima County has always had the tradition of producing and using Tibetan carpets,” Tashi, the director of the Baima County Bureau of Culture, Sport, and Broadcasting, said. “Thanks to support from the government, now we have two Tibetan carpet companies. In order to improve the quality, we have specially invited master craftsmen from Nepal. At the same time, we will integrate the Tibetan carpet industry with targeted poverty alleviation to help the local poor people earn more money. Our carpets have been well-received, which is very encouraging.”
